Chapter Thirteen

Sabine turned the key and opened the door to her room, which turned out to be sunny and cozy, on the very top floor with a single bed piled with fluffy white duvets and tucked under the eaves of the roof. An antique, freestanding mirror reflected the last of the sunlight from the front windows, and a small mahogany desk rounded out the corner, complete with a pad of paper with charmingly curled edges and a black enamel fountain pen.

She plunked her bags on the bed and sank back into the pillows, staring at the beam of sunlight between her and the ceiling. She hadn’t had a moment to think about anything but not freezing to death since she landed in Scotland, but now time had started to slow. And then her phone rang. She’d dropped it into one of the inner pockets of her new jacket, and it was on the last ring before she found it.

“Katherine?”

“I’m so glad I reached you.”

Sabine could sense her smile through the phone.

“I’m just checking in on you to see how you’re getting along.”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I landed in a really interesting little town and met some great people. I mean, I’m sure I’ll travel more later, but—” She looked around the simple, cozy room that already felt more welcoming than her room in New Orleans ever had. “For now, I like this place.”

Katherine cleared her throat. “And what town is that?”

“It’s Muir Rothesay.” Sabine ran her fingertips lightly over the edge of the wardrobe door, worn smooth by a hundred years of touch. “I found the name written on a Post-it in the folder you gave me. So, I just bought a train ticket here.”

The line was strangely silent for a moment until Katherine spoke again. “I thought you might. That’s a perfect choice.”

“Can I ask you something though? When I looked closer at the note, I noticed it’s not your handwriting. Some of yours is on the documents you gave me.” Sabine laid her hand over her heart, not sure if she wanted to know the answer to the question and, if she did find out, what it even meant. “It’s Thea’s, isn’t it?”

“You’re right. It is.” Katherine paused. “Thea gave it to me to include in the packet.”

“Why, though? I know she was in Scotland for a year, but that university was in Aberdeen. I’ve never heard her talk about this village.”

“That doesn’t surprise me, but I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything else.”

Sabine looked through the ceiling windows into the dusky sky, wishing she knew what to ask. And why. “Okay. I understand.”

“I’ll let you go. I know it’s late there.” Sabine listened to the sound of papers shuffling on Katherine’s desk. “And I’m here if you need me.”

“Katherine?” She chose her words carefully. “I know you can’t tell me much, but if there’s one piece of advice you can give me, what would it be?”

The line was silent for so long Sabine started to wonder if Katherine intended to answer.
